Browsing the Future
The book as a form factor has been around for about 2,000 years, since Julius Caesar first decided to fold up a scroll, accordion-style, and mark the pages for later reference. In 1455, Aldus Manutius was the first to publish the portable paperback, and it has remained relatively unchanged since.
In an interactive format, we'll discuss and explore: Why has the book survived so long? What makes the book continue to be relevant and useful? Books are inherently "browsable." What lessons from the book can be applied to the web browser and other digital technologies? How might digital technologies alter or enhance the way that we interact with books as physical objects? What do the book and browser interfaces have in common? What is the future of the book? Of the browser?

Story Bones, a.k.a. The Skele-Tale System: Having Trouble Fleshing out Your Story?
Narrative Media is swiftly shifting as old school storytelling techniques magnify and meld. Enter the audacious designers of tomorrow; to survive they must be adaptable to new markets and mediums. The first inclination is to embrace new methodologies like mashups and crowdsourcing. Progressive? Yes. Piddlin’? Maybe. In the end it’s all for naught if it lacks a great story. WARNING: Electrophonic cinematheque examples will be provided. Public spectacles of synthetic frivolity may ensue.

Fragments that flow: Designing a Social Tool that Plugs into People's Lives
In the world of Web 2.0, feeds, open social networks, APIs, widgets, Facebook apps, mobile and instant messaging mean that there are many ways for users to interact with a service without them having to visit the main website. When Matt Jones and his team first talked about building Dopplr, we wanted give users more choice about how they get their information into and out of the application.
In this talk, Matt will describe how the site at dopplr.com is just one manifestation of a many-headed internet service. We'll talk about how this affects the user interface design, information design and the data modeling, and how it strengthens the relationship between designer and developer, and what it means for the business of growing a social tool that people love.

Content on the Go: The Role of the Mobile Phone in Media & Entertainment
Consumers are increasingly interested in extending their enjoyment of entertainment beyond traditional platforms. While broadcast television, console gaming and home music systems are all valuable parts of the entertainment experience, viewing and listening patterns have changed. We now want to time shift; to tune into multiple streams of content at once; to rate, comment on and contribute to the content we consume; and we want access anywhere and at any time. With these goals in mind, consumers increasingly see the mobile phone as a key part of the entertainment experience.
In a world divided between carriers, device manufacturers and content providers, how do we deliver great media and entertainment experiences on the mobile phone? What is the relationship between the phone, the PC and the television? How does content scale to these different platforms? What are new opportunities for content that are unique to the mobile phone?
With a panel that represents various aspects of the mobile ecosystem, we will explore the role of the mobile phone in media and entertainment from three perspectives: consumers, the business case and the underlying technology.

Designing Campaigns for Mobile Devices
With small screens come big challenges. In this session we will discuss strategies for the web designer in making the transition to mobile.
Topics will include: planning and pre-production, images, style sheets, XHTML and how to effectively test your design on multiple devices. Marketing directors and brand managers will also benefit from a deeper understanding of what is involved in creating Mobile Web experiences for their prospects and customers. Working examples will be used including the mobile website designed for Target's promotion of the recent Speed Racer movie.
Ed Schipul, Schipul - PLAZA 3
Design patterns of Social Media through the power of Story: The hero's journey will be Twittered
From the "12 people you meet on Twitter" to the traditional Archetypes found in storytelling, there are expected characters we meet on the road who perform integral parts in our society and community’s stories. These characters play roles from hero to mentor to whiner to seductress to the perpetually peppy-guy.
We all know them (the guy who Tweets what he had for breakfast or the entrepreneur who Tweets his investment meetings) and love to love/hate them. But what roles do these characters really play in our online communication lives? Where do you fit in, in the grand Twitter and Social Media story? How do you best position your plotline and character development for maximum effectiveness?
Let’s take a look at how designs from the past can help us understand this new Twitter medium. Humans and their stories change very little over the course of time, and when used strategically Social Media tools like Twitter can give you the powerful platform to broadcast and share as never before.
Dan Miller, Neighborhood America - PLAZA 2
Beyond the Hype: Social Media Strategies that Deliver ROI
While marketers understand the need to engage consumers through online and mobile communities, there’s a lot of confusion in the marketplace. In this session, Neighborhood America’s Dan Miller will clear up the uncertainty surrounding social media today. Dan will share his experience in enabling forward-thinking brands to engage consumers through online and mobile platforms, drawing upon the success of companies such as Scripps Networks, Adidas and Omni Hotels to showcase what works, and what doesn’t. This fact-filled session will enable audience members to feel confident they’re going to be able to deliver results from their community-building efforts.
Rex Miller, Mindshift & Joe Tankersley, Walt Disney Imagineering - PLAZA 1
The Future of Design in a Digital World
This session explores the future of design and designers in a digital world. We begin with an understanding of why working in a digital world is fundamentally different. Why digital proficiency is often confused with digital thinking and what our work together will look a feel like when we leave the world of digital immigrants and live and think as digital natives?
Miller and Tankersley will look at some of the fledgling efforts of today’s designers to use these new tools to create a new language of design in their respective fields. Finally, addressing some of the future trends that have the potential to develop as our world becomes even more digital.

Inside Google's Innovation Process
At Google, software engineers far outnumber designers, so the design team trains all incoming engineers on the basics of user experience (UX) design, basics that may be different than you might expect. Charles will share the design principles and some of the exercises Google's UX team uses to enable design consistency in a broad range of products without intensive involvement from designers at every step of the process.
